Mother-Son Dance Songs | “Upward Over the Mountain” by Iron and Wine
Like most poetry, the lyrics in this song are a bit cryptic and more than a bit metaphorical, but singer/songwriter Sam Beam has a knack for delivering soul-soothing ballads time and time again. And the fact that this one is written from the perspective of a son gently consoling his mother makes it a perfect candidate.
Mother-Son Dance Songs | “You Are My Baby” by Kimya Dawson
“You are my baby, but it’s not up to me what you become. That is up to you. I hope you will be gentle, kind, compassionate and free. No matter what, I’ll always love you unconditionally.” What better message could a parent send to a child? And what more could a child possibly hope to hear from a parent?
Mother-Son Dance Songs | “Charlotte Mittnacht” by DeVotchka
Disclaimer: this one isn’t mother-son-themed. In fact, it’s instrumental, so there are no lyrics whatsoever. But if you want to show off your dancing skills with your mom, look no further. Denver-based DeVotchKa uses a classic waltz time signature that is guaranteed to bring the house down if you can pull it off.
Mother-Son Dance Songs | “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens
Yes, the title is “Father and son,”, but hear me out. The lyrical sentiments expressed by the narrator are common to fathers and mothers alike. At the song’s core is a parent’s misunderstanding (and eventual acceptance?) of an offspring’s desire to leave the nest and start a new life of his own. And hey, the chorus line “Find a girl, settle down. If you want, you can marry,” couldn’t be more thematically-relevant.
Mother-Son Dance Songs | “Madre Mia” by Gipsy Kings
Don’t bother translating the lyrics to English. The song somehow makes more sense in Spanish, even for those of us who don’t habla español. Plus, everything sounds prettier in the romance languages. In any case, if you’re up for a little Latin flavor and, moreover, if you have the hips to dance to it, you can’t go wrong with this gem.
