Breckenridge Elopement
Moira and I always talk about how the single best thing you can do on your wedding day is relinquish control. Go with the flow. Roll with the punches. Never has this idea come to fruition more so than it did at Thy and Cristian’s Breckenridge elopement.
Things are inevitably going to go “wrong” on your wedding day. The florist will show up late. Or the centerpieces will be wrong. Or the cake will melt. Or it will rain. Or you’ll trip walking down the aisle. None of these things matter one iota. The only thing that really matters is that you’re getting married to your favorite person. The rest is just icing on the cake.
For Thy and Cristian’s elopement, we had planned on doing their ceremony at Pass Lake on top of Loveland Pass, just northeast of Breckenridge. But when it came time to drive up Loveland Pass, the road was closed for construction. Okay, okay. A bit of a curveball. What now?
As we reconvened in the Keystone Ski Resort parking lot to discuss contingency plans, Cristian had the quote of the year: “I don’t care, I’ll marry her right here in this parking lot.”
If that doesn’t perfectly illustrate the concept of going with the flow on your wedding day, I don’t know what does.
Even so, we ended up deciding we could do a bit better than a gravel parking lot (we were in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, after all), and we drove north to our plan B location, which shall remain nameless. And man, was it a pretty spot. Pass Lake is cool and all, but in retrospect, I think our plan B should’ve been our plan A from the beginning.
After an incredible ceremony followed by dinner in Vail Village, we ended the evening with sunset and star/meteor photos (this Breckenridge elopement took place during the height of this year’s Perseid meteor shower) at Shrine Pass. And this part of the day went exactly according to plan.
Thy and Cristian, thanks to you both for having us, for changing plans so gracefully mid-wedding, and for just generally being the awesome people that you are!
QUICK TIP
Embrace spontaneity. Don’t get too bogged down with preconceived notions about what your wedding day should or shouldn’t be. Your wedding is going to be exactly what it wants to be whether you resist it or embrace it. So you might as well sit back and enjoy!
