Can We Have Marijuana at Our Colorado Wedding?

So, you’re planning your Colorado wedding and you’re wondering how you might be able to incorporate one of the state’s most popular tourist attractions, cannabis, into the festivities. Can we have marijuana at our Colorado wedding? If so, when or where exactly? Can we partake indoors? Does the venue have a “smoking section?” How does this all work? Read on for more.

Can you Smoke Anywhere in Colorado?

Despite what you may have heard, Colorado isn’t some magical fairytale land where ski bums frolic barefoot in the streets listening to Phish and puffing the magic herb. Although, come to think of it, that description isn’t too far off.

In all seriousness, you can’t smoke weed in public, just like you can’t drink alcohol in public. This applies to city streets, parks, public buildings, and so forth. You also can’t smoke in hotels, restaurants, or bars.

So, where can you smoke?

Basically the only place you can legally smoke marijuana in Colorado is on private property with the owner’s approval. So, if you don’t own a home in Colorado, you’re limited to a friend’s house or a marijuana-friendly vacation rental.

Finding a Marijuana-friendly Wedding Venue

But how do you know which Colorado wedding venues are cool with it? There’s no master list online, unfortunately. It’s a question you’ll want to ask when touring venues. “What’s the capacity of your venue?” “Do you provide tables, chairs and linens?” “Do you have list of preferred caterers?” “Can I blaze one during the reception?” You know, the basics.

Now, let’s say that you fall in love with a wedding venue and you can’t imagine having your wedding anywhere else… but, they don’t allow marijuana. We have one word for you: edibles.

Nobody can stop you from having a little snack.

What about WEDDING GUESTS who don’t like marijuana?

This shouldn’t be a problem because you can’t smoke inside a wedding venue anyway. Marijuana-friendly venues typically have a designated smoking area outside and away from the the main festivities. So, aside from you returning 45 minutes later looking a little more giddy than before, these folks will be none the wiser.

And Other Tips for Incorporating Marijuana Into Our Colorado Wedding?

If you want to get high early on in the day, we would recommend bringing eye drops to help with redness for photos. Or sunglasses, if you want to look like a badass.

If you want people to be able to smoke weed and you also want to have a great dance party during your wedding reception, this will potentially be a bit of a tricky balance. As mentioned above, you and your friends have to go off to a separate area to smoke. Wedding guests can be an impatient lot and if they don’t see the newlyweds for an extended period of time, they might get restless and leave. Also, marijuana isn’t the most energetic party drug, so if you want people to dance late into the night, be sure to provide coffee as well.

Oh, and late-night snacks, too. That’s a non-negotiable. Talk to your caterer.

Finally, know your limitations. Weed and alcohol don’t always make for the best combination, especially at high elevations. Pace yourself. Make sure to eat dinner. And drink lots of water throughout the day.
