Copper Mountain Wedding

I can’t help it. I obsessively check the weather before a wedding. Probably more than the couple does. Sometimes, it’s because I’m hoping for a few degrees of relief (I’m lookin’ at you, Denver in July). Sometimes, like for Melisa and Sam’s Copper Mountain wedding, it’s just to see if it’s going to rain, snow, or be sunny – because all of them had a chance of happening.

But I should know better and I do know better. I know that in the past, we’ve had weddings with pouring rain, snow in early April (following a long streak of warm days), and 60-degree weather in December. So Jesse and I have long ago given up trying to battle the weather. Instead, we shoot rain, snow or shine. Because what the weather does is just as much part of a wedding as the centerpieces and guest list.

When Jesse dropped me off at the condo where Melisa and her bridesmaids were getting ready, it was a bit chilly, but otherwise acceptable for an outdoor wedding. By the time I finished photographing her dress and the rings, I looked outside to see a blizzard had moved in. Guess that answered my question about what the weather was planning to do that day!Despite moving the ceremony inside, Melisa and Sam were excited to go outside for their couple’s portraits. The storm that moved through had dusted the peaks with snow while leaving behind some low-hanging clouds that added to the beauty of the fall colors, all of which made for some spectacular photos.

“They” say that rain on your wedding day is good luck. I don’t know who “They” are, but I’d say the best kind of luck you can get in Colorado is marrying your favorite person during the first snow at your favorite mountain.

Melisa and Sam, thank you so much for having us at your amazingly awesome Copper Mountain wedding. And for adventurously traipsing through the cold fields, not just during the day, but again at night. Your enthusiasm for great photos is exactly what we hope for at every wedding we photograph!

There’s that old adage that good things come to those who wait. But poor Sheridan and Danny ended up waiting four years for their Cielo at Castle Pines wedding.
