Devil’s Thumb Ranch Wedding

I’m kind of a word nerd, and as such, I’ve been annoyed recently at how often the word “epic” is thrown around. Replying All on an email is not an “epic fail.” Doing shots at a bar does not make it an “epic” night. Epic should not be a random hashtag thrown into a tweet. But Jessica and Robb’s Devil’s Thumb Ranch wedding? That meets my standards for epic.

What shall henceforth be known as Jessica and Robb’s Epic Wedding took place at a horse ranch nestled next to the Indian Peaks Wilderness area just south of Rocky Mountain National Park. You could see the afternoon storm sweeping in from miles away; their first kiss took place in between a bolt of lightning and the following thunder. The storm arrived just as we wrapped up wedding party photos, which threw a wrench into our plans for bride and groom portraits.

But the wrench ended up being a blessing in disguise. We were tipped off to the “running of the horses” by the Devil’s Thumb site coordinator. So, we popped open an umbrella and traveled up to a trailhead where dozens of horses soon went running by mere feet from where the newlyweds were standing as Jesse and I snapped away. And if that weren’t enough, we got to get up close and personal with Tank and Thunder, the two horses that were originally going to pull the sendoff carriage before the weather moved in.

But we weren’t finished! At the reception, Jessica and Robb executed a beautifully choreographed dance and cut their cake with an ax. Finally, after some good food and a few drinks, we grabbed the couple, two of Robb’s fellow firemen, and a couple of fire extinguishers and went outside for some nighttime photos. I won’t even attempt to describe it; just take a look below.
