Fall Wedding at The Boulders
We’ve photographed a lot of weddings at The Boulders at Black Canyon Inn. I mean, a lot. But the venue is so cool, we always find something new to photograph. We could probably do a hundred more weddings at The Boulders and not repeat the same photo. But sometimes, instead of doing all of the wedding portraits at the venue, we will instead drive the couple into nearby Rocky Mountain National Park for photos. Such was the case for Nicolette and Landon’s super fun fall wedding at The Boulders.
The one thing you need to consider if you want to go off-site for photos – for any location, but especially RMNP – is timing. The drive to the best photo locations in the park can take anywhere from 20 mins to an hour or more, depending on how long the line is at the entry gate. This means it could be more than two hours in the car round-trip, and that’s not including time for photos. This is why we recommend allotting a minimum of three hours in your wedding timeline if you want to do photos in the park.
This may sound like a lot, but you also have to consider buffer time before the ceremony for any necessary hair and makeup touchups and/or wardrobe adjustments. Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but it’s also super windy and many times, snowy, and always either dirty or muddy, or both. I don’t say this to discourage you from taking photos there, just to fully prepare you for what the process entails.
So, here’s a quick sample timeline for you, taken directly from Nicolette and Landon’s fall wedding at the Boulders:
12:30 – Leave The Boulders
1:15 – Arrive at first photo location
1:30-3:00 – Photos at 3-4 different locations
3:30 – Return to The Boulders for pre-ceremony touchups
4:30 – Ceremony
So, there you have it! Feel free to reach out to us with any questions about The Boulders, Rocky Mountain National Park, or the process of doing photos off-site in general.
Nicolette and Landon, huge thanks to you both for being so fun to hang out with, and also for going along with the perfect pre-ceremony timeline for photos in RMNP!
QUICK TIP
If you want to go off-site for your wedding photos, we’re all for it! But, depending on how far we’ll be traveling, it does mean that we might have to do some creative reorganization of your wedding day timeline.
The easiest solution is to get ready early and do a first look so that we have enough time to travel, shoot and return to your venue before the ceremony. You’ll also want to allot time for any hair, makeup and/or wardrobe adjustments, especially if we’re going into the rugged wilderness of a place like Rocky Mountain National Park.
Long story short, you’ll likely have to wake up earlier on your wedding day, but it will be worth the extra effort!
