How to Make Your Wedding Truly Unique

Looking for tips on what to do with your centerpieces? Or what style dress to wear? Curious which color palettes are “in” for 2020. How about the latest DIY trends? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you’ve come to the wrong place. Because if  you’re wondering how to make your wedding unique, there’s there’s only one thing you need to do. And that one thing is… whatever the hell you want!

Don’t worry about what Instagram “influencers” or Style Me Pretty have to say. This is your wedding and it’s going to be uniquely you.

Do Your Thing

This is your wedding. Make it yours. Be yourself and let your personality shine through.

If you want to have a hawk ring bearer, then have a hawk ring bearer. If you want to ride down the aisle on a white horse, then ride down the aisle on a white f*cking horse. If you want to do a motorcycle sendoff, then jump on your bike and ride!

Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. No matter what you do, there will always be a select few killjoys. The axiom “you can’t please everyone all the time” is never more true than it is at a wedding.

What’s Important to You?

Weddings are expensive and budgets are not unlimited. The first question you need to ask yourself is “What’s important to me and my fiancé?”

For some couples, it’s the party. They go balls out, stocking up the bar and booking an awesome band or DJ to keep the house rockin’ into the wee hours of the morning. For others, it’s family. They splurge on nearby accommodations so that everyone can be together for a weekend-long reunion. Or maybe it’s documenting the day that’s most important. These couples make sure to hire the best wedding photographers and videographers, so they can always look back upon their wedding day with a smile.

Figure out what’s most important to you and spend money on that.

What Isn’t Important to You?

On the flip side, feel free to scrap the things you don’t care about.

There’s no written rule that you have to cut a cake during your reception. So if you find yourself wondering, “just what in the hell is the significance of this arbitrary cake ritual?” it’s perfectly okay to not buy a cake. If you’re not into flowers, don’t have flowers. Colorado is one of the most naturally beautiful places on earth, with or without floral arrangements. And if wedding photography isn’t important to you, then don’t hire an expensive photographer just because other people say you have to.

Or scrap it all and elope! Not everyone is comfortable being the center of attention. If you don’t want to have a big wedding, don’t cave to the pressure to do so.

On the flip side, if you’ve been dreaming about a traditional wedding since you were a little girl and every detail is of the utmost important, then by all means, have an awesome traditional wedding with all the accoutrements. Just don’t feel obligated to do it because other people say you should.

How to Make Your Wedding Unique | Unrealistic Expectations

You know how fashion magazines tend to set false standards of beauty? Wedding publications, blogs and websites do the exact same thing to brides and grooms-to-be. If you’re striving for the same fairy tale wedding that some Hollywood power couple had last summer in Tuscany, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

Avoid the pressure to be perfect. There’s no such thing as a perfect wedding. But’s that’s okay. That’s the real world.

Besides, if you follow all of the latest trends and have a “perfect” wedding, it’s just going to look dated in five years anyway. That’s how trends work. They come and go.

How to Make Your Wedding Unique | Handling the Pressure

So once you set your mind to having the truly unique wedding that you really want to have, how do you block out all of the noise? Friends and family are going to make suggestions left and right. It’s good to keep an open mind and incorporate the ideas that mesh with your vision. But if your bridesmaids keep telling you that you absolutely have to do something you’re not into, just say “Thanks! I’ll keep that in mind” and deftly move on.

Try not to get caught up in all the pomp and circumstance. Don’t stress the minutiae. Your wedding will be a success if you just let go and enjoy yourself. The most important thing is that you’re marrying the love of your life. Everything else is secondary.

How to Make Your Wedding Unique | The Moral of the Story

It’s your wedding’s eccentricities that will make it unique. Don’t pay attention to the latest wedding trends, or listen to what other people think you should do. If you put too much stock in the opinions of others, your wedding is going to end up looking like every other wedding taking place that year.

If you want your wedding to be truly unique, listen to your heart. Go with your gut. And focus on the things that make you happy. Only then will you be able to look back on your wedding day without regrets.
