Summer Wedding at Spruce Mountain Ranch

For Moira’s brother’s wedding a few years ago, my now brother and sister in-law decided not to have a cake. Instead, they had pie. This was a big point of contention in the family at the time. One family member proclaimed “You can’t have a wedding without cake!”

Well, I’m here to tell you that you can, in fact, have a wedding without cake. I’ve seen it done. Many times. You can also have a wedding without flowers. And without a white dress. And without guests or a wedding venue, if that’s what you really want. And yes, can even have a wedding without a photographer.

We’ve always been huge proponents of allocating your wedding budget to the things that are most important to you and not spending money on things that you’re told you’re supposed to have, just because you’ve been told that you’re supposed to have them. Needless to say, we were thrilled to see Kristin and Elliot eschew the traditional wedding cake and have instead a super cool retro ice cream truck for their summer wedding at Spruce Mountain Ranch.

The ice cream truck was a huge hit with kids and adults alike and even turned into a sort of collective shared experience in which everyone gathered outside to quietly appreciate the cold summer treat.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not dissing cake. If you like cake, I hope you get the best damn wedding cake available. But if you don’t like cake, don’t let your friends or family tell you that you have to have cake at your wedding. The same goes for everything else you’re “supposed” to have. After nearly two decades photographing weddings, the best advice we can impart is to make your wedding day yours and not anyone else’s. Stay true to your vision. You won’t regret it.

Kristin and Elliot, thank you both so much for having us (and for having the super cool ice cream truck). We hope you had a wonderful time in St. Lucia!

Anya and Ben’s Garden of the Gods wedding was so epic, it couldn’t be contained to a single day or location. Instead, we joined the couple and their guests for three days of partying at the Garden of the Gods Resort and the Pinery, both with equally beautiful – but vastly different – views of Colorado Springs.

From the very beginning of imagining their Estes Park Resort wedding, Brittany and Tony knew they had a large community that wanted to celebrate with them.
