Wedding DJ or Wedding Band?

Who doesn’t like a kick-ass dance party that lasts until the wee hours of the morning? I know I do, both as a wedding guest and as a photographer. But there’s a decision you need to make when planning your wedding and deciding what type of dance party you’d like to have: should we hire a wedding DJ or wedding band?

You can’t go wrong either way, but read on to find out what’s right for you.

WEDDING DJS: PROS AND CONS

To be honest, there really aren’t any cons to hiring a wedding DJ, so long as you make sure to hire a good one. The best wedding DJs read the room and understand the flow of a wedding so that they can keep the dance floor hopping all night long.

One of the main benefits to hiring a wedding DJ over a band is cost. A DJ is one person, typically with less gear than a band, so it’s going to be cheaper than hiring a full band. Also, a DJ doesn’t necessarily need to take long breaks between sets, and even if they do the music doesn’t stop, which means there’s no interruption in the dance party.

WEDDING BANDS: PROS AND CONS

The only real downside to hiring a live band to play your wedding is cost. A five-piece band means that five people need to get paid, eat dinner and probably have a few drinks as well. Also, a live band can’t play for four hours straight, so there will be intermissions and you’ll need to have a plan in place that doesn’t kill the party.

On the bright side, the energy that a great live band can bring to a wedding reception is on a whole other level. Some of the wildest and craziest dance parties we’ve seen have had live bands and they always make for a night to remember.
