Where to Take Engagement Photos in Colorado
Last week, we wrote about where to propose in Colorado, so we thought it fitting to follow up with a post on where to take engagement photos in Colorado. Now, keep in mind that there are approximately 5,000 great places to take engagement photos in Colorado, but these 10 are a good place to start.
1. Seven Grand Denver
Seven Grand is a super cool speakeasy-style bar in LoDo (lower downtown) Denver, close to Coors Field. It’s one of our favorite bars on the planet and we’ve had the pleasure of doing two photoshoots there: one engagement session, and one wedding. If you’re going for an urban vibe for your engagement session, and you love delicious cocktails, Seven Grand is a great option.
2. Chateau La Plante
Alright, the caveat here is that the only way to take your engagement photos at Chateau La Plante is to hire us to take them for you. That’s because Chateau La Plante is our home! We have 50 acres of high plains desert surrounded by views of Pikes Peak to the north, the Sangre de Cristos to the west and the Spanish Peaks to the south. And, it’s one of the best areas in the state for star gazing, which makes for some really cool nighttime engagement photos.
3. Cheesman Park
Cheesman Park is right next to the Denver Botanic Gardens, a bit southeast of downtown Denver. It’s a great spot for running, cycling, walking your dogs, doing yoga and all of the other Colorado-centric things. And it has a super cool pavilion and great views of the Denver skyline, making it the perfect place for engagement photos.
4. Denver Botanic Gardens
The Denver Botanic Gardens are right next to Cheesman Park, so depending on the length of your engagement session, you could potentially cover both locations. The gardens are a photographer’s dream. We could probably do a shoot there every day for a year and not repeat the same photo. Note: there is a professional photography permit fee to shoot at the DBG.
5. Gross Reservoir
Not many people know about Gross Reservoir, which is a bit surprising considering how close it is to Boulder (and considering how pretty it is as well). The benefit of this is that you won’t run into too many people while taking your engagement photos. And, if you’re up for it, you can incorporate canoeing or kayaking into your session!
6. Kenosha Pass
Kenosha Pass is well-known as one of the best leaf peeping spots in all of Colorado during the fall. When the aspen forest begins to change color in late September/early October, it is truly a site to behold. Ironically, we’ve only ever done a photo session there in the winter. But, if you’re wondering where to take engagement photos in Colorado in the fall, you could do a lot worse than Kenosha Pass.
7. Ouzel Falls
Ouzel Falls is located in the lesser-trafficked southern region of Rocky Mountain National Park, so you won’t have to deal with the crowds that are often present in the northern end of the park. Keep in mind, it’s a long hike up to Ouzel (about eight miles, round trip).
8. Rifle Falls
Rifle is a long drive from Denver, but it’s worth it, especially in the winter. Once the falls freeze over, it creates a natural ice cave in between the frozen water and the canyon wall, making for really cool engagement photos. Make sure to bring micro spikes or at least Yaktrax because the footing can be very slippery.
9. Silverton
Arriving in Silverton feels like stepping out of a time machine into the middle of the 19th century. It’s one of the few places left in Colorado that still has that “old west” vibe. Situated in the southwest corner of Colorado, in the San Juan range, Silverton is surrounded by great hikes, waterfalls, lakes and beautiful mountain views.
10. Vail
If you like to ski or snowboard and are interested in incorporate an activity into your engagement session, Vail’s 5,300 skiable acres are ready to be explored. Our recommendation would be to start early in the morning before the crowds appear, head way out back to Blue Sky Basin, and then finish up in the village with après ski drinks.
